Passing the Torch: Post-War America, 1945-1960
In this five-part lecture/discussion series, Victor Harris will examine the period from the immediate post-war to the election of 1960. Typically viewed as an era of conformity and consensus, a lull between the war and the more turbulent 60s, it was an era beset with struggles and discord. This series will be held on Tuesday evenings at 7pm, May 13th through June 10th @ the Phelps Community Memorial Library, 8 Banta St., Phelps, NY 14532, www.phelpslibrary.org., (315) 548-3120. JUNE 10th: ALL SHOOK UP: A TORCH IS PASSED TO A NEW GENERATION The final presentation expands on the themes of previous lectures. It showcases the phenomenon of Rock n' Roll and its impact on the youth culture as music became an outlet for expressing rebellious sentiments. It will also resume with commentary on the Cold War as Khrushchev replaced Stalin and the ideological foes moved toward a “thaw” in the Cold War. The final topic will analyze the election of 1960 and how television was influential in shaping a new political culture.
