Opening Reception and Exhibit: Unbound Art
Opening Reception and Exhibit: Unbound Art Some of life’s most profound questions and concepts are explored by Kim Schrag and Fernando Llosa through their art, which will be featured in “Unbound Art”, a new exhibit at the Arts Center of Yates County’s Flick Gallery opening May 6th. Kim and Fernando have been collaborating artistically and conceptually for the past two decades. They discovered a shared interest in exploring the human condition and began an ongoing dialogue. Those conversations then turned into content for their artwork. While they generally work independently on projects, they have created a few large oil paintings and some drawings together. A graduate of Cornell University, Kim Schrag has been creating her own art and teaching since 1983. Using painting as her primary choice of media, she likes to experiment with different techniques including: variations of surface textures where she uses plaster to create low relief surfaces and painting on creased and/or folded paper. Ink drawings have become a part of recent endeavors. Learn more about Kim and her work, by visiting www.kimschrag.com. Fernando Llosa was born in Auquipa, Peru, where he lived until moving to the United States at the age of 16. As a young adult, Fernando returned to South America, where he began exhibiting his photography, drawings, and paintings. In 1990, he spent two years in New York City and the Catskills before moving to the Ithaca area. Fernando’s preferred mediums are stone assemblage, painting, book-making, and photography. Learn more about Fernando and his work by visiting unboundart.com/default.html. Kim and Fernando’s unique work along with that of local and regional artists make up the Unbound Art exhibit, which runs May 2nd through June 6th. Among the featured artists, local and regional artists will also be exhibited at the Flick Gallery. There will be a free reception on May 6th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, where the community is invited to meet the artists, support the Arts Center, enjoy live music, wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres. The Arts Center is located at 127 Main Street in Penn Yan. For more information please call 315-536-8226 or email at artscenter@ycac.org.

Brian Peters & Jeff Davis: Sharp's Appalachian Harvest
165 McGraw Hall, Central Ave., Cornell University, Ithaca, NY British traditional musician Brian Peters and American old-time musician Jeff Davis have created a special multimedia event tracing the evolution of British folk music on both sides of the Atlantic. Through songs, old ballads, dance tunes, breakdowns, children’s songs, and gospel, plus haunting historic photos and diary entries, they bring to life the arduous work by English collectors Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles in the southern Appalachians in 1916-1918 to preserve folk music from remote mountain areas, one of the largest folk song collections ever made. Brian Peters is a leading performer of English songs and tunes, renowned for his historical research and for his prowess on long ballads, assorted squeezeboxes, and guitar. Jeff Davis, a protégé of Mike Seeger and Frank Warner (also music collectors) is a fine banjo player, fiddler, and singer with a rare authenticity gained from personal contact with old-time musicians. Tickets: Ithaca Guitar Works, Autumn Leaves, Greenstar Market, Bound for Glory, online www.cornellfolksong.org/ and at the door. Info: web or 607-351-1845. $15 adv./$17 door; $3 rebate for members, seniors, teens. Cornell students $5. Children under 13 free.

Mothers Day Free Tour of Rose Hill Mansion
Celebrate Mom with a tour of Rose Hill Mansion this Mother's Day. On Sunday, May 8, 2016 get Mom's ticket free when you buy one adult admission to the house. Here you can explore Margaret Swan's life as daughter, wife and mother in the 19th century. Once a working farm, Rose Hill and the surrounding grounds are now open seasonally for guided tours. Built in 1839, the elegant Greek Revival house was the center of a busy and productive farm at mid-century. Much of the guided tour focuses on the Swan family who lived there from 1850 to 1890. Through family letters, photographs, and diaries, visitors explore their joys and sorrows, and their interactions with neighbors and the many workers required to keep the large house and farm in working order. Twenty rooms of the house are restored and furnished in the Empire style, popular from the 1820s to 1850s. The property also has a terrific view of Seneca Lake and nearby farmlands.
