Hungerford 318 Launches Holiday Ornaments on First Friday, October 3
Hungerford 318 is a partnership of 5 local artisans, selling their handcrafted goods, each created in their home studios. Jean Keane, JK Stitches, Shortsville, NY, uses whimsical and elegant fabrics to create useful accessories for pets and their humans. Lori Prince, L Prince Designs Art Jewelry, Rochester, NY, creates artisan jewelry using copper, sterling silver, polymer clay and resin. Stefani Tadio, Pine Tree Designs, Fairport, NY, designs symmetrical patterns on a computer, then stitches them by hand on paper, to make framed art, greeting cards and notepads. Mary Terziani, Mary Terziani Glass, Rochester, NY, kiln fires colorful glass into bowls, plates and coasters in a very painterly style. Tom Zachman, Tom Zachman Fused Glass, Webster, NY, uses primarily recycled wine bottles to make his one of a kind wind chimes, often combined with steel elements. Each artist has created ornaments in their own medium, perfect for the winter holidays and throughout the year. Hungerford 318 opened in June 2014 in the historic Hungerford building, located at 1115 East Main Street, Rochester, NY 14609. The artists are active participants in First Friday (6-9pm) and Second Saturday (10am-3pm) events at The Hungerford, and their shop is also open by appointment. Beginning Pressure Canning Class
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Yates County is offering a beginner pressure canning class on Friday, October 3, 2014 at 4:30 PM. This will be a very basic introduction to the principles of pressure canning, including hands-on preparation and processing. A vegetable available at that time will be canned, and participants will be able to return to the office and pick up the cooled and sealed jars the following week. With increased interest in both “buying local” and home canning, it is important to know the current recommendations, processing times and procedures. Pressure canning is required of non-acid foods, including most vegetables and meats. The class will cover how to determine which method of processing is appropriate for which foods, equipment needed, and the steps involved in pressure canning. Cost is $10.00 per person or couple, and participants are required to sign an acknowledgement of risk waiver form before the class. Top to Bottom Tours Rose Hill Mansion
For the 2014 season the Geneva Historical Society will offer a special Top-to-Bottom Tour of Rose Hill Mansion on the first Saturday of the month, beginning May 3. These tours will be an opportunity for visitors to see areas of the house not open on our regular tours, including the basement and cupola. Tours will be held at 11am, 12:30pm, 2:00pm and 3:30pm and are included in regular admission. The tour is appropriate for adults and children 15 years and older. Please be advised that there are many stairs to climb and some confined spaces included in the tour. Because of these limitations, space on the tour is limited, and reservations are required. Reservations may be made at the Geneva Historical Society at 315-789-5151 or at Rose Hill after May 1 at 315-789-3848.

Economic development agencies from across Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben Counties will be presenting a brief overview of their agencies funding programs and later in the evening will be available for additional Q & A. In addition, special guest speaker Brad Treat, from REV Ithaca Startup Works will assist entrepreneurs with the challenges they face taking their businesses to the next level. Brad was most recently the founding CEO of Mezmeriz, a high-tech company making interactive projectors and reality capture cameras to embed into mobile phones. In addition, he was a co-founder of SightSpeed, an innovative video and voice communication company which was acquired by Logitech for $30 MM. Washington Street Cemetery Walks
Encounter the spirits of Geneva's past in a theatrical program to be held this fall at historic Washington Street Cemetery. From Beyond: Washington Street Cemetery Stories, will feature community actors portraying citizens of Geneva’s 19th-century past. On Friday, October 3 from 6 to 8 p. m. and Saturday, October 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. performers will “haunt” the cemetery and bring their past back to life. Stories will include those of the first graduate of West Point, a local Civil War colonel, an early children's book author, and a local African-American abolitionist. Live music of the Civil War era will also be provided by the group Rowhouse. From Beyond begins at The Presbyterian Church at 24 Park Place. From the church, participants will be led to Washington Street Cemetery to hear the tales of the cemetery's residents. Tours will leave the church every 10 minutes. Those attending are encouraged to dress for the weather. The tour requires walking 4/10ths of a mile and stand during the performance. Performances will last approximately 25 minutes. For those unable to walk or stand, accessible performances will be held in the church hall on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Reservations are required for the accessible performances. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, grade school through college level. As space is limited, reservations are strongly encouraged for all tours. Refreshments will be available in the Fellowship Hall at the Church.
