"The New York Volunteer: Songs and Stories of the Civil War"
A lecture by Linda Russell Hosted by Cortland County Historical Society, this presentation looks at New York's involvement in the Civil War through eyewitness accounts - letters, diaries and songs. A girl writes of soldiers being recruited in her town. A young man fears he may not come home alive. These accounts offer personal perspectives of New Yorkers in the face of war. Songs like the Battle Cry of Freedom and Just Before the Battle give musical voice to these experiences and concerns. Other songs examine New York issues and regiments: Tunes of the Irish Brigade, parlor ballads and soldiers' ditties. New York songwriters also contributed to the cause, including Brooklyn's Henry Tucker who wrote Weeping Sad and Lonely and Ethel Lynn Beers whose All Quiet Along the Potomac was sung by both sides. The event will take place at 1pm at the CNY Living History Center, 4386 US Rt. 11 (Homer Ave.), Cortland, NY 13045. The National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office organized the exhibit with the help of a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): great ideas brought to life. The traveling exhibition is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center. Visit www.cortlandhistory.com for more information or call 607-756-6071.

Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union Presents an Artist Exhibition by Eric Baldwin
The Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union presents an artist exhibition by local photographer, Eric Baldwin. His work is on display at the Finger Lakes FCU Main Office (Geneva Branch) lobby and Loan Department. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Friday, June 5th from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the Credit Union’s Main Office. Light refreshments, including a wine tasting, will be provided. Eric is originally from Albuquerque, NM. He became interested in photography when he received his first camera at 10 years old. He took pictures of everything he saw - trees, animals, landscapes, and just about all that can be imagined. He graduated high school with honors and awards for his work. From there he graduated with a Graphic Arts degree from Finger Lakes Community College. “I love the beauty of a composition and the contrast of color or black and white.” In 1997, he shot his first wedding. He then understood more of formal and informal shots. To become more versatile, he began shooting landscapes, waterfalls, and structures. He also uses high dynamic range photography for a few shots, which can make a huge pop in the picture with a large tonal scale in color or black and white. Photos can be ordered in various sizes as prints ready to frame. To purchase any of the images that are on display at the Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union, contact Eric directly and arrangements will be made to have them available to you as soon as possible. You may contact Eric Baldwin via email at ebd1125@hotmail.com, or call at (315) 651-5873. Stop in the Credit Union to see the exhibit, which will continue to be on display through August. After that date, another artist’s exhibit will be displayed. If you are a local artist seeking a location to display your art or photography, simply contact Pat Ely, Marketing Director, at (315) 781-1334 Ext. 134, for Finger Lakes FCU Supports the Arts information.

Geneva Night Out Book Signing & Civil War Exhibit
Sarah S. Thompson, author of Finger Lakes Wine Country, will sign copies of her book at the Geneva History Museum during Geneva Night Out on Friday, June 5 at 7:00 PM. The book is a comprehensive regional history of the wine industry with more than 200 images from the collections of area wineries, museums and archives. It traces the development of the industry from the first vineyards in the 1830s to the revolution of the past thirty years. Thompson looks at the success of early wineries in the late 19th-century, how Prohibition decimated this business in the early 20th, and how innovators transformed and resuscitated it at mid century, bringing about a Finger Lakes wine renaissance. Sarah S. Thompson is a freelance writer living on Seneca Lake, where she and her husband plan to open a small winery. Sarah writes about food, wine, science, and news for Cornell University and regional publications. In addition, the new exhibit, “Now is the Time of Our Country’s Need”: Geneva and the Civil War, will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. during Geneva Night Out. For more information, call the Geneva History Museum at 315-789-5151 or visit our website at www.genevahistoricalsociety.com. For over forty years, women’s rights and dress reform advocate Elizabeth Smith Miller (1822-1911) called Geneva home. With her daughter, Ann Fitzhugh Miller, she formed the Geneva Political Equality Club in 1897. Their former home is now part of the Lochland School campus, where the Geneva Historical Society and the Lochland School will hold a piazza party modeled after those of the Millers. Along with live music, Elizabeth Cady Stanton (portrayed by Eleanor Stearms) and Jill Tietjen, CEO of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, will speak.
