The event will be filled with prayer for our government leaders, military, churches, families, media, education and businesses. This year’s theme is ‘Lord Hear Our Cry’. Judy Mayne, Committee Chair explains, “This day will emphasize the need for individuals to place their faith in God, who is sovereign over all governments, authorities, and men. At this crucial time for our nation, we can do nothing more important than pray in unity with millions of other Americans, in bringing light and hope to our country through the power of prayer.” For more information about the National Day of Prayer, go to: www.nationaldayofprayer.org or contact Judy Mayne at 315-539-2963.

National Day of Prayer
Waterloo…Representatives from local Christian faiths in the village of Waterloo have been planning for the National Day of Prayer which will be held on May 7 beginning at 6:00 PM at LaFayette Park. Committee members are Nancy Gray from the Assembly of God, Judy Mayne from the United Methodist, Kathy Peters from St. Francis-St. Clare, Charlotte Carroll from Harvest Hill and Margaret Ann Williams from the First Presbyterian. The 64th National Day of Prayer is an annual observance which will be held in all 50 states on Thursday May 7th, inviting people of all faiths to pray for our Nation and its leaders. This year’s theme, “Lord Hear Our Cry” is based on the Scripture verse, 1 Kings 8:28 – “hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.” Judy Mayne, Waterloo’s chair, informs, “The National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1775, the first Continental Congress called for a national day of prayer. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln called for a day of “humility, fasting and prayer.” President Reagan amended and signed a law in 1988 permanently designating the first Thursday in May as National Day of Prayer.” “If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a Nation gone under.” Quote by President Ronald Reagan. Opening Reception and Exhibit: Pure Pigment
Opening Reception and Exhibit: Pure Pigment Coloring with chalk is child’s play, “sidewalk art”. But grown-ups call their chalks “pastels”, and they paint pictures with PURE PIGMENT. While other media use water or oils to carry the color to the painting, pastels lay down pure pigment, and therefore can be exceptionally brilliant. Pure Pigment is an exhibit featuring the paintings of Mark Verna, a popular Webster painter, many of them in pastel. His rendition of Grimes Glen is so inviting, one could hear the water running over the rocks and feel the sun’s rays. Also on display will be pastels by Wendy Harris of Syracuse. Last summer Wendy was honored to be an artist in residence at the Art Center’s Sunny Point on Keuka. Her week of wandering and painting depicts the beauty and peace of the Keuka area. Soapstone carver, Sandy Cline, of Ontario, Canada, will fill out the featured area of the gallery with his bears and loons and birds and wolves, polished to a shine. His love of the natural world is turned, by his hands, into deep green carvings, reminiscent of jade. The opening reception for PURE PIGMENT will be Friday, May 8, from 5:00-7:00 PM. Wine will be provided and music by Barbara Anderson at the piano. Please bring your friends and enjoy the art, hors d’oeuvres, punch or wine, and the energy of artists sharing their passion in PURE PIGMENT. The Arts Center of Yates County is located at 127 Main Street, Penn Yan, NY, 14527. Check the website, www.artscenteryatescounty.org or email artscenter@acyc.org for more information.

Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War
Cortland County Historical Society would like to invite you to the opening of a new exhibition, “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War,” a national traveling exhibition which focuses on Abraham Lincoln’s struggle to meet the constitutional challenges of the Civil War. The exhibit opens at the CNY Living History Center on May 15 and runs until June 19. Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States in 1860, at a time when the nation was falling apart. By the time he took the oath of office, seven states had already seceded from the Union. The exhibition vividly evokes Lincoln’s struggle to resolve the basic questions that divided Americans at the most perilous moment in the nation’s history: Was the United States truly one nation, or was it a confederacy of sovereign and separate states? How could a country founded on the belief that “all men are created equal” tolerate slavery? In a national crisis, would civil liberties be secure? The National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office organized the exhibit with the help of a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH): great ideas brought to life. The traveling exhibition is based on an exhibition of the same name developed by the National Constitution Center. Cortland County Historical Society is offering free programs and other events for the public in connection with the exhibition. Please call Mindy Leisenring at (607) 756-6071 or send an e-mail to info@cortlandhistory.com. Visit www.cortlandhistory.com for more information.
