Opening Reception and Exhibit: Cabin Fever
Opening Reception and Exhibit: Cabin Fever The Arts Center of Yates County is pleased to present “Cabin Fever” featuring John Coffer and his authentic tintype photographs. Also featured will be basket weaver Joan Belles, spinner and fiber artist Gisela Schneider, Alan and Rosemary Bennett’s fish sculptures and re-purposed furniture painted by Kathy Disbrow. The opening reception will be Sunday, February 7, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM including a live demonstration of spinning. The exhibit will run until closing on Sunday, March 13, with a live demonstration of tintype photography by Mr. Coffer. The Arts Center is located at 127 Main Street in Penn Yan. Call 315-536-8226 or email artscenter@acyc.org for more information. Off the grid at a Dundee address, lives a gentleman named John Coffer, known to photography aficionados as the premiere maker of full scale true 19th century authentic wet-plate collodion photography in America (perhaps the world) today. John has crossed the country taking photos which could pass for Civil War documents, developed in his dark-room wagon, pulled by his horse “Brownie”. Each summer he conducts “Camp Tintype” on his rural site, teaching others this lost skill, as well as offering portrait sittings. His photos hang in major galleries in New York and other cities, but will come home to Yates County for this exhibit. Gisela Schneider will be spinning at the “Cabin Fever” opening, Sunday, February 7, making yarn from natural fibers. Joan Belles’s baskets take many shapes - functional, decorative, small enough to hang around your neck, large enough to toss the month’s papers in. The Yates County History Center is coordinating an exhibit with “Cabin Fever” and invites the public to enjoy a display of its tin type photo collection beginning Tuesday, February 2, inside the Oliver House Museum. The collection of almost 100 portraits illustrates the affection between siblings, parent and child, and husband and wife with a delightful assortment of studio props. The photographic process used to create a tin type was cheap, easy and quick. Popular during the Civil War, they were easily carried in soldier’s pocket. On Saturday, March 12th, visit the Oliver House again to enjoy weaving and fiber arts demonstrations by volunteers and staff in the “From Sheep To Shawl” exhibit room at 1:00 PM. Enjoy seeing the early barn framed rug loom in action and see spinning demonstrations. Examples of several of Yates County Historical Center’s oldest coverlets will be on display.

A Celebration of Life: Delicate Watercolors by Wilma Gilmore
In her prime, Willie was an avid gardener and for decades she enjoyed visiting Cornell Plantations, where she was a long-time volunteer and active member and past president of the Auraca Herbarists. Confronting serious ailments, her prolific gardening activities changed from shovel and wheelbarrow to container plantings. Then, in time, her focus shifted to creating these beautiful watercolors of blossoms and fruits which are on display. These delicate paintings were found in a drawer after her passing. They came as a surprise even to her family and close friends. As her beloved husband of over 60 years said, “Perhaps Willie saw the paintings as metaphor for life: blossoming, then fading and dying, as we all do, with youth, maturity, and finally, passing on. It is our good fortune that Willie’s last flower creations, the paintings, her Celebration of Life, are ours to enjoy, forever.” This exhibit will be on display at the Brian C. Nevin Welcome Center at Cornell Plantations. Please note the visitor center is closed on Sunday and Monday. Brian C. Nevin Welcome Center, Cornell Plantations 124 Comstock Knoll Road Ithaca, NY 14850
