Pulteney Street to close Thursday for construction
  6/25/14 @ 3:20 pm

The closure of Pulteney Street to exercise safety for pedestrians and travelers during the construction of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Performing Arts Center will begin this Thursday.

Pulteney Street will be closed from Hamilton Street to St. Clair Street until approximately October 31, 2015 and those wishing to access campus will need to do so via South Main Street, St. Clair Street, Jay Street or White Springs Road.

Pulteney Street will still be accessible to emergency vehicles. Near and in close proximity to Pulteney Street there will be heavy truck traffic, equipment use and potential crane activity during the construction phase. Numerous street cuts will be required in order to connect the new building to water, sewer, storm, gas and other services located beneath Pulteney Street.

In order to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors during this phase of construction, City Council is reviewing recommendations for a reduction of parking along S. Main Street and "Resident Only" parking on the east side of College Avenue and north side of VerPlanck Street. Any changes made would go into effect before the start of the Colleges' school year.

The 65,000 square foot building will be located on the HWS campus across the street from the Scandling Campus Center on Pulteney Street. This new academic building will include facilities for music, theatre and dance, as well as a film screening room. Site work for the Performing Arts Center parking is progressing rapidly, but to ensure the safety all of those travelling, these precautionary measures will be enforced as construction begins this Thursday.
