New film to show at the Smith in Geneva
  5/152/14 @ 3:31 pm

Briskly entertaining as well as edifying, the documentary film "Tim's Vermeer" screens at The Smith Opera House on Wednesday, May 21 at 7:30pm.
Tim Jension is a Texas-based graphic artist and inventor who is obsessed with trying to solve one of the greatest mysteries in the art world: How did 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, renowned for works like "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and "The Music Lesson" manage to paint so photo-realistically more than a century before the invention of photography? Jension's daring premise-that Vermeer painted with the aid of technological ingenuity, and not talent-is put to the test as the filmmakers follow their subject over five years as his quest takes him through Holland, Yorkshire, and to the gates of Buckingham Palace itself. Plumbing the depths of the intersection between technology and art, the film boldly reframes our contemporary discussions of genius, effort, and obsession within both the humanities and the sciences.
"Tim's Vermeer" is another fascinating intellectual detective story offered up by directoral duo Penn Jillette and Raymond Teller. Though the pair are best known for their work in television and are oft dismissed as pessimistic skeptics, their fascination with the limitations of human knowledge and the fragility of our narrative explanations has engendered a rich and thoughtful analysis of a not-so-modern day mystery. Combining the showmanship of Penn and Teller with the offhand charm and rare perseverance of a Renaissance man like Tim assures audiences of more than enough art and intrigue to pique their curiosity and whet their sense of wonder.
