Flooding, severe weather concerns persist

Major flash flooding slammed the Penn Yan and Branchport areas last night, with over 5" of rain washing out roads and damaging buildings.

Please avoid the area of possible today. many roads are closed and crews have a long task ahead cleaning up.

More flooding will be possible today and on Friday from additional heavy rain.

Today will be another hot, humid day with more thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and evening hours. Like last night, it is possible that storms will repeatedly move over the same area, dumping excessive amounts of rain. This is what caused the flooding last night and could easily strike some other area again today.

In addition to the threat for flooding, there is also a lesser threat for some severe weather. While less of a threat than the flooding, it seems there may be a slightly higher chance for severe weather today than there was last night, when there were some isolated reports of large hail and wind damage. The threat is highest across western New York, but the Finger Lakes region is still at risk. High winds and large hail are the primary threats, but the chance for a tornado, small as it may be, must be mentioned as well.

I am also closely watching our weather on Friday. A band of widespread heavy rain is likely, with the potential for an additional 1-3" of rain. How this rain will impact us depends on what happens today, how much actually falls on Friday, and if tomorrow really stays as dry as it looks.
