Fleming man murdered, teen in custody

Sheriff David Gould reports that on Monday evening at 11:00 pm, Cayuga County Sheriffs responded to a 911 call of a stabbing at 5828 Lakeview Drive in the Town of Fleming. Upon arrival Deputies found the victim, John E. Welsh, age 41 of that address, unresponsive.

Welsh was transported to Auburn Community Hospital by Fleming Ambulance and pronounced dead at 11:38 pm.

Logan T. JonesThe preliminary investigation identified the suspect as Logan T. Jones, age 18, also of the address above. It was reported that Jones had fled the scene on foot possibly armed with a knife.

The Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and Auburn Police Department began an extensive ground search and at 12:48 am on Tuesday, New York State Troopers Anthony Demarco and Richard Rivenburg spotted Jones on Kearny Ave. in the City of Auburn and took him into custody without incident.

Jones was not armed at the time he was found.

Detectives are continuing the investigation and continuing to interview witnesses.

The murder weapon, believed to be a kitchen knife, has not been located. The weapon is believed to have been discarded somewhere between the scene and the dead end area of White Birch Lane.

The Sheriff’s Office requests that residents in the areas of Lakeview Dr., Forest Hill Dr. and Whitebirch Lane check their properties and notify the 911 center if they locate a weapon.

At this time there is no motive identified in the murder, and the circumstances preceding the stabbing are unknown.

The victim and the defendant are step father / step son.

Logan T. Jones has been charged with Murder in the Second Degree. He was arraigned in the Town of Fleming Court and remanded to the Cayuga County Jail without bail.

The Sheriff’s Office was also assisted by the Fleming Fire Department and the Cayuga County 911 Center.
