WCNY, Central New York’s public broadcasting company, invites the community to the Grand Opening of its new Broadcast and Education Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 30 at 415 W. Fayette St. in Syracuse.

The Grand Opening ceremony will feature a unique multimedia ribbon cutting from 2 to 2:45 p.m. A separate ribbon cutting for the Education Center will be held at 3:30 p.m. Following the Education Center’s ceremony, an open house will be held with special information for teachers and parents. Paula Kerger, PBS President and CEO, and Dr. John B. King, Commissioner of Education of the State of New York, will speak at both ceremonies.

“We are eager to open our doors for the public to engage with today’s WCNY,” said Robert J. Daino, WCNY President and CEO. “We are excited for our community to witness the power of public broadcasting to educate, entertain and inspire and recognize WCNY’s commitment to position itself for the future, for the benefit of the Central New York community that owns and values this essential community asset.”

Throughout the day, visitors can tour the building to see how television and radio programs are made and enjoy the opportunity to star in TV spots of their own. Visitors can also meet on-air hosts, enjoy live musical performances, share suggestions for new programs and meet everyone’s favorite handyman, Bob the Builder™. WCNY’s new café and courtyard also will be open.

Attendees will learn about WCNY’s innovative leadership in driving the creation of Centralcast LLC, the first collaboration of its kind within PBS, leveraging a cost-savings strategy serving as a model for the entire PBS system. This ground-breaking approach for the delivery of television content up to 200 streams (or channels) of television can be managed from this single location alone, saving stations subscribing to the service millions of dollars. Currently, all nine PBS stations in New York and New Jersey, a total of 35 channels of television, are being managed, serving nearly 20 percent of the PBS viewership across the United States.

Also on the tour is WCNY’s new 10,000-square-foot Education Center that provides educational programs for learners of all ages. One of those programs is Enterprise America, New York’s first hands-on experiential learning program that provides middle school students with a real-life immersive learning experience focused on STEM (science, technology, education and math) skills, entrepreneurship and financial and civic literacy. Students apply what they are learning in the classroom as they become business entrepreneurs, political leaders, employees and consumers in our real-world city with 14 businesses and a City Hall. Up to 30,000 students per year can participate in the Enterprise America experience, which helps prepare them for future college and career success.
