On Thursday evening at 8:26 pm Seneca County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to 2945 Pre-emption Street, in the Town of Waterloo for a report of an out of control male, arguing with another family member. The 911 caller further reported the male had been drinking and is on psychotrophic medication that did not appear to be working.
First arriving deputies encountered Aaron Russ, age 40, of 2945 Pre-emption Street. Russ, a parolee, had allegedly just removed his electronic ankle monitoring device and was acting aggressively, appearing to want a confrontation with police.
A uniformed Sheriff's Deputy attempted to calm Russ down, but he became more agitated and attacked the deputy. The Deputy deployed a less lethal taser which had no effect on the subject. Russ began repeatedly striking the deputy in the face with a closed fist. The deputy drew his service weapon and fired two rounds. At least one, or possibly both, fired rounds struck Russ in the right arm.
Russ was transported to Geneva General Hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The deputy, a two year member of the Sheriff's Office was treated at Geneva General Hospital for a concussion and released.
The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
Seneca Sheriff Jack Stenberg, Undersheriff Gary Sullivan and Seneca County District Attorney Barry Porsch were present on the scene.
Seneca County Sheriff's Deputies were assisted by NYS Parole Officers, Geneva Police, Ontario County Sheriff's, Geneva and Border City Fire Departments.
NYS Parole has filed a parole detainer warrant against Russ.
The investigation is continuing.
