Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould reports that the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two persons in connection with an anhydrous ammonia theft which occurred early Thursday morning 2/14/13 on Shields Rd. in the Town of Venice.

Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a complaint by the property owner that he had witnessed a suspicious van repeatedly driving past his farm. After discovering that his tanks had been tampered with the owner then followed the van into Tompkins County where it was eventually located and stopped by the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department.

Cayuga County Sheriff’s Detectives responded to the stop location and upon interviewing the occupants of the van learned that a second vehicle was also involved. A bulletin for the second vehicle was issued and a short time later that vehicle was also located and stopped by the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Department.

The subsequent investigation and interviews led to the determination that two of the four persons being interviewed had been involved in the theft of anhydrous ammonia on Shields Rd. and that the ammonia was to be used for the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

The other two persons involved had only come to the area to assist when the anhydrous thieves’ vehicle became temporarily disabled.

Charged are:

Casey D. Aldrich age 33 of 206 Parkhurst St. Elkland Pa.

Timothy E. Hickey age 34 of 3240 High St. Ext. Corning, N.Y.

Grand Larceny in the fourth degree (felony)
Possession of burlgar’s tools (misdemeanor)

Both subjects were arraigned in the Town of Venice Court. Aldrich, who is currently on parole in Pennsylvania, his being held without bail. Hickey was remanded to the Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. The New York State Police also assisted with one of the stops in Tompkins County.
