On the afternoon of Friday Dec 27th, Seneca Falls Police received a report of a 49 year old Seneca Falls female in the canal off of Cowing Street. SFPD, NYS Park Police and a member of the females’ family located a point of entry behind 27 Fall Street near Van Cleef Lake.

Personal effects of the female were also located near the suspected point of entry.

The Seneca Falls Fire Department and Seneca County Dive Team was activated and responded to the scene along with the Border City Fire Department Dive Team and Seneca Co. Office of Emergency Services and dive search/recovery operations began. Mutual aid assistance in the form of dive teams and support personnel from surrounding counties responded and assisted with the dive operations.

Dive operations concluded around 6 pm Friday and resumed Saturday morning.

During the investigation documentation was located that led the case being investigated as a suicide.

Saturday’s operations included the use of a K-9 Recovery/Cadaver unit and additional dive operations. The canal was also lowered about 3 feet which proved about 10 additional feet of shoreline to aid in search operations which included the deployment of an underwater camera system.

At approximately 4:30 pm on Saturday the body of the 49 year old female was located about 1/4 mile from the suspected entry point.

SFPD is not releasing the name of the female.

During the operations the following agencies provided assistance: New York State Park Police, Seneca Co. Sheriff’s Dept., New York State Police, Ontario Co Sheriff Dive Team, Waterloo FD, Fayette, FD, Cayuga FD, Aurora FD, Aurelius FD, Skaneateles FD, Owasco FD, North Seneca Ambulance and the Seneca Falls FD Ladies Auxillery.

On behalf of all those who responded SFPD would like to thank the Trinity Episcopal Church for the use of their facility in providing a warm location for responders to gather during the operations.
